The American Promise Is Still Ours to Keep
First, preserve it. Then, put it to work.
Outrage may awaken us. But action is what moves us forward.
Election Day is November 3. Virginians are already voting, and every day between now and then represents an opportunity we cannot recover once it passes.
Across America, families are struggling to make ends meet. Parents worry about the future their children will inherit. Military families understand that decisions made far from home can carry consequences for generations. And Americans are questioning whether those entrusted with power are listening to the people they serve.
These frustrations are real. But frustration cannot become resignation.
We have not lost the American Promise.
That promise was never a guarantee of perfect leaders, easy answers, or freedom from disagreement. It was a commitment that We the People would retain the power—and responsibility—to shape our future.
Our Constitution established institutions, checks and balances, and mechanisms for holding government accountable. Those safeguards matter. But they depend upon people willing to understand them, preserve them, and participate.
First, we must preserve those mechanisms. Then, we must use them.
Here in Virginia Beach, that responsibility is taking shape through sustained, coordinated work.
The Virginia Beach Democratic Committee has organized its mission around three priorities: Build Capacity. Voter Contact. Get Out the Vote. Our volunteers are turning those priorities into action.
Since early voting began on September 18, VBDC volunteers have continuously staffed the voting location at 500 Studio Drive. Day after day, members have shown up to welcome voters, provide information, and fulfill the commitments they made to one another and our community.
That uninterrupted coverage continues a tradition we established in 2024. It represents more than a schedule filled. It represents reliability—people showing up when they said they would.
With your help, we will keep that streak alive.
But the challenge is growing. Early voting expands to satellite locations on Sunday, October 18, followed by an expanded week from October 24 through October 31. More locations mean more shifts, greater coordination, and more volunteers needed to sustain our coverage. All culminating in covering 108 precincts on November 3.
Our candidates are doing their part—meeting residents, listening to concerns, and engaging voters throughout Virginia Beach. We can help them remain focused on those conversations by taking responsibility for another essential task.
We need 40 volunteers to help deploy and retrieve campaign signs around Election Day. This is practical, time-sensitive work that supports our candidates while allowing them to concentrate on the people they hope to serve.
And our organizing extends beyond election logistics.
Through Freedom Summer Virginia Beach, our leadership team and community partners have already executed seven Vote YES ×3 town halls, with more still to come. These neighborhood conversations are helping residents understand Virginia's proposed constitutional amendments concerning reproductive freedom, marriage equality, and restoration of voting rights.
Each town hall reflects the work of organizers, volunteers, community partners, and residents who believe that informed participation matters.
Inform. Register. Mobilize.
These are not isolated activities. They are parts of a coordinated mission: strengthening our organization, engaging our community, supporting candidates, and preparing for Election Day.
We have moved from planning to training, from organizing to neighborhood engagement, and from identifying what needs to be done to putting people and resources behind the work.
Now we must finish what we started.
Do one thing. Then do another. And another.
Take an early-voting shift. Join the Sign Team. Make a call. Help a neighbor understand their ballot. Whether you have an hour or an afternoon, there is meaningful work to be done.
Find your opportunity to volunteer with VBDC.
On Friday, October 23, from 6:00–8:00 PM, we will gather for our United We Vote CommUNITY Rally, featuring Congresswoman Elaine Luria and our endorsed Virginia Beach City Council and School Board candidates. It will be a moment to recognize those who have given so much, stand together as a community, and carry renewed energy into the final days before November 3.
Join and support United We Vote.
To everyone who has staffed an early-voting shift, organized a town hall, knocked on a door, made a call, supported a candidate, or quietly handled the work that makes everything else possible: thank you.
To our Freedom Summer Virginia Beach leadership, community partners, precinct teams, poll greeters, Sign Team, and the many volunteers working behind the scenes—I am deeply grateful for your dedication and service.
The American Promise is not preserved by waiting for someone else to defend it. It is preserved by people who choose to participate.
We have work to do. We have the means to do it. And we have one another.
In gratitude and service,
Sean R. Monteiro
