Remembering the Fallen — Renewing the Promise of America

Memorial Day is more than the unofficial start of summer. It is a solemn American tradition rooted in sacrifice, remembrance, and our shared responsibility to preserve the promise of this nation.

The first Decoration Day was organized on May 1, 1865, in Charleston, South Carolina, when newly freed Black Americans gathered to honor Union soldiers who gave their lives to preserve the Union and end slavery. Their act of remembrance helped shape what we now know as Memorial Day — a tribute grounded in patriotism, gratitude, and service.

Today, we honor the brave Americans who made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our country and the ideals of freedom, democracy, and opportunity. So much is owed by so many to so few.

At a time of division, economic uncertainty, and growing challenges at home and abroad, Memorial Day reminds us that the strength of America has always come from the courage, sacrifice, and unity of its people. The men and women we remember this weekend believed in service above self and in an America strong enough to lead with both resolve and compassion.

Let us honor our fallen not only with remembrance, but with resolve — to build an America worthy of their sacrifice.

An America that strengthens democracy, supports working families, honors service, protects freedom, and ensures opportunity for every generation to come.

From all of us at the Virginia Beach Democratic Committee, we wish you and your loved ones a meaningful and reflective Memorial Day.
