Virginia Beach Voter #1: Honoring a Tradition of Democracy
In Virginia Beach, being Voter #1 on the very first day of early voting carries a special weight. It is more than just casting a ballot—it is a symbol of our commitment to democracy and a reminder of the power each of us holds to shape our future.
Today, that honor belonged to Susan Hippen, a proud member of the Virginia Beach Democratic Committee. Susan stepped forward as the first voter of the 2025 election cycle, carrying on a cherished tradition in our community.
For years, that title was lovingly held by Yvonne Leonard, one of our own. Yvonne showed up, year after year, as the first in line to vote—making sure her voice was heard and setting the tone for what it means to protect our democracy. Her dedication was an example to us all: voting is not just a right, it is a responsibility.
Though Yvonne has passed on, her spirit continues to inspire us. Today, Susan’s act of being Voter #1 is more than symbolic—it is a tribute to Yvonne’s legacy and a rallying call to all of us in Virginia Beach.
At a time when voting rights are under attack—whether at the federal level, here in the Commonwealth, or right in our city with the Vote YES on 10-1 Charter Change Referendum—showing up matters. Each ballot cast is a defense of our democracy and a declaration that people, not developers, must decide our future.
The Virginia Beach Democratic Committee is proud that this tradition lives on. We know that every election begins with one voter, but it takes all of us standing together to finish the ballot and deliver victories up and down the ticket.
Today, we honor Yvonne’s memory, we celebrate Susan’s example, and we commit ourselves to carrying this energy all the way through Election Day.
👉 Be like Susan. Honor Yvonne. Protect our vote. Show up early, bring a friend, and let’s win for Virginia Beach.
