Voter Information

In a democracy, voting is important because it is the primary way for citizens to have their voices heard and to hold elected officials accountable. A healthy and robust democracy relies on the participation of its citizens; when people don't vote, their voices are silenced.

Voting empowers citizens and promotes accountability

  • Holds officials accountable: The act of voting gives you the power to influence who represents you at the local, state, and federal levels. When elected officials know they must answer to their constituents at the ballot box, they are more likely to act in the public's best interest.

  • Mobilizes for change: Voting enables citizens to collectively create positive change in their communities. A strong voter turnout can send a powerful message that new policies are desired and can shift the political debate.

  • Influences resource allocation: The officials elected by voters establish tax rates, determine budgets, and decide where public resources will be distributed, directly affecting community services such as schools, police, and fire departments.

  • Amplifies community needs: When communities vote in higher numbers, their shared values and issues are more likely to be prioritized by elected leaders.
