Fitch, a Connecticut native, rolled up her sleeves in 2008 and began working with the Democrats of Virginia Beach on several key campaigns including the 2008 presidential election. Eight other Democratic members were recently nominated to leadership posts. In a town that historically votes Republican, Democrats are actively recruiting new members.

“I got a lot of support,” Fitch said of her recent nomination. “A lot of people came out. We have a lot of goals. We want to get different neighborhoods engaged in the political process, as well as churches, and individuals.

“The challenge is to provide more training for our volunteers, officers, in fact, everybody,” Fitch continued.

Any person attending the caucus, before participating, shall sign a standardized Caucus Participation Form stating that he or she is a registered Virginia Beach voter, is a Democrat, does not intend to support any candidate who is opposed to a Democratic nominee in the ensuing general election, and believes in the principles of the Democratic Party.

The caucus will conclude at 8:00 PM at which time the doors will be closed and only persons in line may complete a form and vote.

Individuals who have submitted this application will be eligible for election to the city committee and able to vote for officers. Members elected through this process on December 8 will serve for two years. The reorganization process will begin with the election of members at the December 8 Committee Meeting, Meyera Oberndorf Central Library. Elections of Officers will occur on January 9, 2012.

A nominating committee has been formed to submit a list of members to serve in one of the following elected positions: Chairperson, Vice-Chairperson, Secretary, Treasurer, Outreach Director, Fundraising and Events (Finance) Director, Precinct and Elections Director, and Campaign Recruitment Director. The person elected will serve a two-year term which begins with the election in January and runs to the election of officers for the 2014-2016 cycle. Nominations will be taken from the floor after the committee report is presented at the December 8 committee meeting. Sandra Brandt, brandts1@verizon.net, committee chair will make the report and can respond to questions.

In order to be eligible to run for one of these offices, a candidate must be a member of the Virginia Beach Democratic Committee agreeing to abide by the principles and bylaws of the Democratic Party. The candidate must certify that he or she is a Democrat who is a registered voter in Virginia Beach. Additionally the person must believe in the principles of the Democratic Party and indicate that he or she does not intend to support any candidate who is opposed to a Democratic nominee in the next ensuing election.

The Virginia Beach Democratic Committee hereby announces that it will hold an unassembled caucus beginning at 7:00 PM, December 8, 2011 at the Central Library, Folio room for the purpose of electing members to the Virginia Beach Democratic Committee. The work continues. As we approach the end of this year, we are also approaching the reorganization of the Virginia Beach Democratic Committee and election of new officers. In addition, we are shifting gears to focus on the 2012 election, where we already have great candidates in Barack Obama, Tim Kaine, and Paul Hirschbiel.
