By all accounts, the devastation caused by the earthquake in Haiti is beyond imagining. It’s times like this, when immense disaster strikes, impacting millions of lives, that we become most accutely aware that we are all one people, a worldwide community.
You may have already received requests from President Obama, Organizing for America, Democracy for America, the Democratic Party of Virginia, Young Democrats of America, or other Democratic organizations asking that you contribute something, anything, to relief efforts underway in Haiti. If you have already done what you are able, thank you. If not, as one member of the committee said, reaching out with aid to the victims of the tragedy in Haiti is a way for Virginia Beach Democrats to put our money where our mouth is.
If you have not yet done what you can to lift up our brothers and sisters in Haiti, I ask you to consider the following ways of helping right now, as the needs are enormous and immediate:
- Give to the American Red Cross. You may donate $10 to the Red Cross to be charged to your cell phone bill by texting “HAITI” to “90999.”
- Give to Doctors without Borders.
- Give to the United Way Worldwide Disaster Fund.
- Give to Direct Relief International.
- Plan to donate blood. Visit www.givelife.com to search for opportunities in your area.
